「関羽五関破図」は、嘉永6年（1853）に、明代に成立した中国四大奇書の一つ「三国志」を題材にした武者絵。画面の中を所狭しと躍動する極彩色のヒーローは、国芳芸術の特長を余すことなく伝えています。

関羽五関破をモチーフとした、武勇と義侠心を大胆に描き出している。蜀漢の創始者である劉備に仕え、その人並み外れた武勇や義理を重んじた彼は曹操など同時代の多くの人から称賛された。死後、後世の人々に神格化され関帝となった。
